Why Join a Parenting Forum?
A forum is basically some kind of public conversation about a particular topic. Real world forums and discussions also exist, but they aren’t well attended because you have to get the kids dressed and in the car and either take them with you or take them to a sitter’s and it’s usually too much trouble. With the Internet Age, however, we have online forums, where people send messages back and forth. You might want to join a parenting forum, where you can interact with other parents who deal with the same issues you do. Adult conversation In a parenting forum, you can have an adult conversation. It may be online, but you are connecting with people who speak in full sentences about things other than poop or toys (sometimes). Most of the times you talk about your kids, but other topics do come up. Over time, you develop a kind of kinship with the people on the forum and they become friends. Information A parenting forum is a good place to get information about marriage, kids, family, and parenting. Professionals who deal with families often moderate a parenting forum and can be a tremendous source of help. Advice Advice isn’t the same as information, and the people on your parenting forum will give you good advice if you ask them. Send a message explaining what you’re dealing with and ask, “How do you guys deal with this?”. You’ll get very helpful replies, often with solutions you wouldn’t have thought about on your own. Support A parenting forum is a great place to go for support. You can whine and have a pity party, and they will all come and offer condolences. You can celebrate your victories and they’ll all be glad with you. You can brag freely about your kids (but you have to be gracious when the other members brag about theirs). The other members of the forum know what you’re going through because they’re going through it, too. An online parenting forum is an excellent way for parents to get information, advice and support. You can meet people and make friends and even have an adult conversation with people all over the world. Because it’s online, you don’t have to take the kids. You can wait until they are in bed, make a nice cup of cocoa, turn on the computer and have a good time talking to your parenting friends.
